Socket and Socketing Resin

Wire rope socket is a termination fitting attached to the end of wire rope and fix it permanently. It is a type of anchoring device for wire rope. Socketing is the process of attaching a socket to a wire rope.

The most common types of sockets are:

• Open and Closed Sockets. An open socket has a bolt or pin which can attach to rigging such as a hook block. Closed sockets have a hole designed to accept a bolt or pin.

• Swaged Sockets. Swaged sockets are pressed onto wire rope using special dies. These type of sockets are fatigue and breakage resistant at 100% of the rope’s breaking strength when applied with the proper sized dies. Swaged sockets are not recommended for fiber core or lang lay wire ropes.

• Poured or Spelter Sockets. Spelter socket attaches to the wire rope end by pouring molten zinc or a socketing resin. The socketing compound, once hardens, firmly holds the socket to the wire rope. Spelter sockets are one of the most efficient types of wire rope sockets with almost 100% efficiency.

• Wedge Sockets. In wedge sockets, wire rope passes around a grooved, wedge shaped piece of steel. Theses sockets are common in mining and construction applications where wire rope is subjected to abrasion and high stress. Wedge sockets allow adjusting the length of wire ropes.
